2012 Toyota Camry coming to Malaysia in June
The picture says it all. The leaked brochure above hinted that the all-new 7th generation Toyota Camry will be arriving at our shore in June. It will be here in the form of 2.0E, 2.0G and 2.5V!
For the first time ever Toyota is introducing a 2.5litre Dual VVT-i with ACIS engine for the Camry (nope, it's not a V6) which has 181PS and 231Nm of torque. Mated with it is a six-speed Super ECT automatic transmission with sequential shifter. It has an increase of 14PS and 7Nm compared to the outgoing 2.4litre engine. It's very close to Nissan Teana's 2.5litre V6 engine figure of 182PS and 228Nm of torque.
Meanwhile, the 2.0litre VVT-i engine has a bump of 1PS compared to the outgoing 2.0litre Camry's engine. 148PS with 190Nm of torque, but still mated with an obsolete 4-speed Super ECT gearbox with sequential shifter. Toyota should give the 2.0litre Camry a better gearbox while everyone else is using a 6-speed gearbox!
More details can be found by enlarging the specification list below:
It's great to see Toyota is giving the 2.5litre Camry a 6.1" touchscreen display with DVD, manual rear side sunshade and auto rear sunshade, and reverse camera as standard for the 2.5litre Camry, as well as side airbags. No curtain airbags available though, where I think should be standard for a D-segment car. To make a comparison, Volkswagen Passat (selling now at RM171k for CKD, might even be cheaper than the 2.5litre Camry!) has 6 airbags. Something weird is going on - no VSC?
Our version of Camry does look grand and Lexus-like, but it's still a little conservative looking to me. I prefer US version of Camry, red hot chilli pepper, perhaps a sport version?
