One of the most popular Android smartphones in the world has just gotten more affordable. With a recent revision in RRP pricing, the Samsung Galaxy S II now retails for RM1,699 — RM400 less than when it was initially launched here in June last year at the price of RM2,099. As a result of the pricing revision, operators are dropping their subsidised pricing for the Samsung Galaxy S II as well. The Samsung Galaxy S II is now available with contract from DiGi for as low as RM1,699 on the DiGi Smart Plan 88. The Smart Plan 88 is a new addition to DiGi’s Smart Plan range where previously it was only offered selectively during promotion periods and specific product launches. If yellow is not your colour, Maxis has also revised the pricing for the for the Galaxy S II which is now available for as low as RM999 with 24 months contract with any postpaid plan on top of a required 3GB data bundle. A few days back, Samsung made official the existence of yet another Galaxy S variant called the Galaxy S Advance . The device packs: 4.0-inch Super AMOLED display with 800×480 pixel resolution 5MP rear camera with 720p video recording, 1.3MP front camera – same numbers as the Galaxy Nexus, possibly same hardware as well. 1GHz dual-core processor with 768MB RAM 8GB/16GB Internal Storage MicroSD card slot (Up to 32GB) 1,500mAh Lit-Ion Battery Android 2.3 Gingerbread While the higher-end models in the Samsung line-up like the Galaxy S II and Galaxy Note supports HSPA+, the Galaxy S Advance only supports HSPA connectivity with download up to 14.4Mbps. In terms of dimensions, the Galaxy S Advance is 9.69mm thick and weighs 120g. As comparison, the roughly similar looking Galaxy Nexus has a thickness of 8.94mm and it weighs 135g. "S" stands for Super Smart and is at the top of the models, a letter only highest-end flagship phones will wear. Letter "R" is for Royal and phones named with this letter will be premium devices combining power, design and productivity. "W" as in Wonder" which will describe high-end phones. "M" as in Magical with mid-tier phones offering decent performance at affordable price. Young collection with letter "Y", with entry-level phones which have a huge advantage offered by their low price tags. Additionally, the Korean manufacturer will continue to use suffixes for its phones: "Plus" will stand for a refresh or upgrade of an existing mode while "Pro" will describe phones with a hardware QWERTY keyboard. Approximately one year ago, I shared with you guys a phone destined to slay the (then) iPhone produced by Apple; One year ago, the phone was so sensationally good that people have actually turned their heads and wallets away from the rather back-lagging iPhone and pick Samsung Galaxy S ! U Mobile now offers the Samsung Galaxy S II. The starting price of RM849 is offered on U Mobile’s U Premium Plan with 24 months contract. As comparison, Maxis offers the Galaxy S II from RM1399, DiGi from RM1349 and Celcom from RM1208. Just a few weeks back Samsung had announced that it was getting a bit tired of trying to think up catchy new names for all of its phones and instead was going to be reverting back to the habit of using a combination of letters and numbers. This practice was standard procedure just a few years back and is a tradition that is only really still employed by Nokia. But surely thinking up new names can’t be that difficult? Along with the new naming convention , Samsung has announced four new Galaxy phones — one “W” (high-tier), one “M” (mid-tier) and two “Y” phones (entry-level) — that’s slated to make an appearance at next week’s IFA 2011 in Berlin. First up, we have the Android 2.3 running Samsung Galaxy W packs a 1.4GHz processor and a 3.7-inch WVGA screen along with a 1500mAh battery. There’s also a 5MP camera in there somewhere. Next, we have the Samsung Galaxy M Pro which also runs Android 2.3 and features a 1GHz processor with a 2.7-inch HVGA screen and a 5MP camera rear camera. There’s also a VGA front-facing VGA camera and a 1350mAh battery. In the entry-level segment, we have the Samsung Galaxy Y and the Galaxy Y Pro. Samsung reports that it has managed to sell 3 million of it latest flagship Android smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy S II, within 55 days of the device being launched globally. The original Galaxy S took 85 days to hit the same mark. There’s no doubt that Samsung’s Galaxy S line of smartphones are amongst the company’s most successful consumer devices but the number still pales in comparison to the iPhone 4. Apple reported that it sold 1.7 million units on June 26 2010, just two of days of device’s debut on June 24 last year. Still, reception for the Galaxy S II has been tremendous.

Samsung Galaxy S will be getting Android 2.3 Gingerbread. Samsung Mobile Finland confirms that the roll-out of the upgrade will begin mid of April starting from Europe。

Every year, TIME magazine lists the top 10 of almost everything. In a lists of top tens in 50 categories the magazine susses out the highs and lows, the good and the bad, of the past 12 months. From top 10 albums to top 10 viral videos, the list is definitely worth a read. Interestingly, the Galaxy S is listed well above the iPhone 4 which itself is listed below the Nexus One. So what does this tells us? It appears that 2010 is the year that Google’s Android becomes a legitimate contender in the mobile OS arena to formidably battle against the mighty iOS. I think I’m going to do something similar to what I did with the iPhone Vs Incredible and list a few categories and give you my personal take. I think you maybe surprised by the results but as always let me know if you think I’m right on or off the mark.
