Apple’s Touch ID Fingerprint Scanner is Amazing

Image
A fingerprint scanner in an iPhone. When we heard about it, we dismissed it as a ridiculous rumour and for good reason. Fingerprint scanners have been in computers for years now, they promise enhanced security but they are notorious for piss poor accuracy and when they do work they take way too long to read your print. So you can understand why we didn’t think Apple would bother with a fingerprint scanner on their latest iPhone. It’s just too cumbersome, too finicky, too unApple to find the place in the sleek, intuitive iPhone. And then Apple reinvented the fingerprint scanner. Obviously we’ve not yet tried Touch ID ourselves but looking at the many hands-on reviews and comments from people who have the experience is totally unlike anything that we are used to. Apple’s Touch ID does everything fingerprint scanners didn’t. It’s easy to setup, it’s accurate, its fast, its intuitive and most important of all, it doesn’t change the way you use your iPhone. Yet at the sam...

iPhone 5S, iPhone 5C First Wave to Hit Stores September 20

Image
Rumours about the new iPhones are rife and the latest one reported by Japan’s Nikkei says that the first wave of iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C shipments will hit Japan on September 20. Japan, like the US and a few other key markets, were among the first countries to start selling the iPhone 5 and if Nikkei’s sources are reliable, it’s a good indication of when we can expect the new iPhones to hit Malaysia. If we had to guess, it would be somewhere between November and December perhaps even as early as October. What’s certain is that Celcom, DiGi and Maxis will offer the new iPhones at the same time. Persistent rumours say that Apple is working on two new iphones. One will be an update of the iPhone 5. The iPhone 5 will receive the “S” moniker and a minor refresh with an updated processor, improved camera hardware including a dual-LED flash as well as an embedded fingerprint scanner. There’s also a new gold color option on the same anodised aluminium body. The other new iPho...

Nokia Announces Lumia 925 for Malaysia. Available in August

Image
It’s official, the Lumia 925 will be available in Malaysia starting August and will sell for RM1,799. First announced in May, the Lumia 925 features an aluminum frame wrapped around a polycarbonate body. In terms of hardware, the 925 is virtually identical to Lumia 920 with the same 1.5GHz dual-core Qualcomm MSM8960 processor with 1GB RAM and 2,000mAh battery. Where the 925 differs from the 920 is the display and camera. While the size of the display remains the same — 4.5-inch 1280×768 pushing out 331ppi — the Lumia 925 uses AMOLED where the 920 uses an LCD IPS panel. Also, the Gorilla Glass display with Nokia’s ClearBlack technology can be used even if you have gloves on. The 8.7MP camera with Optical Image Stabiliser is given a boost with a 6-element Zeiss optics lens instead of five on the Lumia 920. In addition, the Lumia 925 is lighter at 139 grams (Lumia 920: 185 grams) and smaller overall (in terms of height, width and thickness). Nokia’s built-in camera appl...

Nokia Announces the Lumia 625. Comes with a Relatively Large Screen and Not Much Else

Image
Looks like the leaked images and specs were spot on. The Lumia 625 is official and its calling card is the largest display ever put on a Nokia Windows Phone. But is it enough to make you want one? We don’t think so. With a 4.7-inch LCD display, the Lumia 625 is considered average in a market dominated by Android phones with large displays sporting 720p or full 1080p resolution. And the display isn’t particularly sharp either. Pushing out a lowly 201ppi with a 800×480 resolution, the Lumia 625 has one of the lowest pixel densities we’ve seen on a smartphone in recent months. On the up side, the display sports Gorilla Glass 2 and can be used even if you’re using gloves over your digits. Powering the Lumia 625 is a dual-core 1.2GHz Snapdragon S4 processor with 512MB RAM and 8GB internal storage. Usable memory can be increased with a microSD card slot that takes cards up to 64GB and there’s also 7GB of cloud storage courtesy of Microsoft via SkyDrive. If you ask us, 7GB...

iOS 7 revealed with cleaner UI & usability enhancements

Image
Apple is giving its iPhone and iPads a new breath of life with its latest iOS 7 operating system. After launching several mobile devices since 2007, the iOS platform has been pretty much the same with minute changes here and there. With the competition stepping up from the Android, BlackBerry and even Windows Phone camp, a change is needed by Apple to keep its mobile devices on par with today’s growing need. Without a doubt, the iOS platform is one of the easiest to use mobile OS out there. Simplicity has always been a key which allows users from either young or old to pick up an iPhone or iPad and start using it with rather minimal learning curve. For power users particularly those who have been comfortable with other flexible mobile platforms, would be harder to please on iOS. Biggest challenge is how could Apple offer more control and features but yet maintain the simplicity that it is has been famous for?
