Nexus 7 maker Asus confirms sales of Google’s tablet approaching 1m units a month

Google's Nexus 7 tablet appears to be selling well, with its manufacturer claiming that almost a million units a month are being snapped up by consumers.
Sales of Google’s Nexus 7 device appear to be going well, with manufacturer Ausus reportedly saying it’s close to hitting the million-a-month milestone.
Google’s first tablet offering was generally well received by industry critics when it launched in July this year though until this week there had been little word from the two companies behind the device as to just how well it was selling.
Speaking to the Wall Street Journal on Tuesday following the Taiwan-based firm’s third-quarter earnings conference call, Asus chief financial officer David Chang said of Nexus 7 sales, “At the beginning, it was, for instance, 500K units a month, then maybe 600, 700K. This latest month, it was close to 1 million.”
Positive reviews and increasing availability around the world will have combined to help boost sales of Google’s 7-inch 8/16GB tablet as it battles for attention in a crowded market.
The Mountain View company will be hoping to build on its success with a number of new devices, unveiled on Monday, including a 32GB version (3G optional) of the Nexus 7, and a 10-inch model trumpeted as being “the highest resolution tablet on the planet” with its 2560 x 1600 resolution Super AMOLED display packing 299 dots per inch (dpi).
While Google will be relieved that its Android-powered tablet is a hit with consumers, a million sales a month still leaves it with some catching up to do when you consider how Apple’s iPad continues to fly off the shelves, with the Cupertino company selling 14 million units this year in the three months from July.
And just to really tighten things up, Google faces further competition from Apple with the imminent launch of its 7.9-inch iPad Mini device, as well as from other big hitters such as Amazon with its range of popular Kindle Fire HD tablets.
Heading into the holiday season, it looks like consumers in the market for a tablet may be left burrowing into their heads with an endless scratch of confusion as they attempt to choose between what this year will be a large range of pretty decent devices of all sizes and all prices. Which one has caught your eye?
