Tan Chong Motor has revealed to research houses that it will be launching an additional two models in the next two years – the Nissan Note as well as a new A-segment model.
According to a report by Maybank Research, the Nissan Note will be launched by the end of 2014, following the car’s recent preview at the 2013 KL International Motor Show.
The Nissan Note on display at KLIMS had a 1.5 litre engine paired to a four-speed auto under its hood, similar to the powertrain in the Nissan Almera. The Note will allow Nissan to have a competitor against the Honda Jazz, which is a same segment car that’s pretty competitively priced in Malaysia.
Next up is word of a new A-segment car due for launch in 2015, reported by CIMB Research. The new A-segment car is expected to be a ‘killer model’ in terms of sales volume. The report specifically mentions a “RM50,000 and below” price point. For Tan Chong to achieve such a price for even the most affordable variant of a multiple variant offering would likely mean high localisation.
Nissan’s A-segment contender is currently the Nissan March (badged Micra in Europe), so it would be safe to assume that this is the model to be launched.
Another possibility is the Datsun Go hatchback, which rides on the same platform and wheelbase as the Nissan March. Although it falls under a different badge, the lower cost car will be sold in India at Nissan dealerships instead of separate Datsun dealerships like it is in Indonesia, so a similiar setup to India could also be arranged for Malaysia.
The Oppo N1 took centre stage at yesterday’s Oppo Malaysia launch event. Apart from the flagship device, Oppo has also brought in 3 other devices covering the entry level to mid-tier smart phone segments. All 3 models are running on Oppo’s own Color OS which is based on Android 4.2 Jelly Bean and offers the similar double tap feature to wake the device.
Read on as we take a closer look at the additional Oppo smart phones that will be available locally.
First we have the Oppo R1 which is their mid-tier device that’s priced at RM1,298. It comes with a 5″ IPS display that does a 720p HD resolution of 1280×720 pixels. Powering the device is a Quad-Core 1.3GHz MediaTek MT6582 processor with 1GB of RAM and on-board there’s 16GB of storage which is non-expandable.
Despite being a mid-tier device, it comes with a 8MP camera that’s optimised for low light conditions and a rather uprated 5MP front facing camera.
Design wise, it looks and feels like a slimmer version of an iPhone 4 with glass on both sides with the use of aluminium frame. The front 5″ display is also toughen further with Gorilla Glass 3 for extra protection. Powering the device is a 2,410mAh battery and overall it weighs 140 grams. The R1 is just 7.1mm thick, which is thinner than the iPhone 5S of 7.6mm.
Oppo Find 5 mini
Next we have the Oppo Find 5 mini which is a step lower at RM998. It comes with a slightly smaller 4.7″ display that does a qHD resolution of 960×540. It also runs on a similar Quad-Core 1.3GHz MediaTek MT6582 processor with 1GB of RAM but on-board it comes with a smaller 4GB of storage. Fortunately you are able to expand the storage via microSD.
The Find 5 mini comes with a 8MP BSI camera at the rear while the front sports a 2MP camera. Juicing up the device is a modest 2,000mAh battery. In the hands it feels rather light but the plasticky build reminds us of a Huawei Ascend P1.
Last but not least is the Oppo Neo, its entry level device in Malaysia at only RM598. It comes with a rather decent sized 4.5″ IPS display that does 800×480 pixels resolution. Powering the device is a dual-core 1.3GHz processor with 512MB of RAM. Like the Find 5 mini, it only comes with 4GB of storage but it is possible to expand using microSD.
At the back, it features a 5MP main camera and comes with a front facing 2MP shooter. Despite being an entry level device, the phone feels rather solid in the hands. Juicing up the Neo is a rather modest 1,900mAh battery. At this price, the Oppo Neo faces stiff competition including the cheap and cheerful Moto G that offers much more with a mere RM100 extra.
If you haven’t seen it yet, you can check out our hands-on and first impressions of the Oppo N1 flagship which is priced at RM1,798 in Malaysia.
